The project for the quadrupling of the Rho–Parabiago railway line is back on track. It includes the construction of a strategic connection between the Lombardy capital and Malpensa Airport via a spur between the Rfi line and the Ferrovie Nord line.
Italian railway network (Rete ferroviaria italiana), the lead company of the Infrastructure Hub of the Fs Group, has awarded the contract for the project to the business grouping made up of S.I.F.EL. S.p.A and Impresa Luigi Notari, Costruzioni Linee Ferroviarie, D’Adiutorio Costruzioni, Quadrio Gaetano Costruzioni, Costruzioni Edili Baraldini Quirino.
The contract, worth over 259 million euros, is also funded with PNRR resources. The project calls for the construction of a connection to Malpensa Airport through a “spur” (Y Link) between the Rfi line and the Ferrovie Nord Milano line, near the Busto Arsizio station. The work is completed by establishing the new Nerviano stop and upgrading the Parabiago station.
The interventions will increase the line’s capacity and regularity indicators, with separation between the flows of suburban, regional, long-distance, and freight traffic, raising the capacity of the line from 10 to 24 trains per hour. This will make it possible to enhance rail services in the area closest to Milan, improving also the connections between the Lombardy capital and Malpensa Airport.
A great sign for the development of “integrated public mobility” capable of capturing the stream of passengers who will use a functional mix of train & air for long-distance travel across the national, European, and international territory.
